Well done Bertie!

Shame Keaveney missed out but Blaney and McDaid fought an impressive campaign canvassing on Keaveneys patch.

Sinn Fein failed to impress, considering they were robbing conatiners liek mad in Dublin Port to pay the election bills they still performed poorly.

Did you all remember to vote?

Seemed close.

When did Ireland start using the PR electoral system?

Was this something new at the time or was PR voting common practice at the time?

I wonder why Ireland never took on the UK style of First Past the Post, any ideas?

Because it is supposed to give minorities a chance. When we were partitioned PR was forced upon us to give southern protestants a chance. Fair enough they need representation. Its an ok system. Back to the election. Sinn Fein actually done quite well in Donegal with Pearse getting 8000 and Padraig getting 6000 first preferance votes. This showing indicates that Sinn Fein fought an impressive campaign. And i think that it was the media that contributed massively to the "poor" showing of PSF. They called the outcome of the election months before pooling day stating that it was an either/or election. Because of this people were duped into voting which government they would prefer. Sinn Fein failed to land massive amounts of FF transfers because FF voters were feared of letting FG in. In truth the PR system squeezed them out in many constituencies where they polled very strongly. It is not over for them they can build on this election, secure the 2 Donegal seats, get Crowe re-elected, get Mary Lou in, and build a base in other constituencies. I no longer support the party because of their new found love affair with the RUC but rest assured they will be in government with FF at some stage (providing Pat Cowen does not assume the leadership). Actually forget all that politics is impossible to call
