Bradley hits out at “Sunday” report leak

Buncrana-born Denis Bradley has hit out at a English newspaper publishing what it claimed was details of the Saville Inquiry into the Bloody Sunday killings in Derry in January 1972. The 5,000 page report is due to be made public today. On Friday last, the Guardian claimed the inquiry had concluded “some” of the 14 men shot dead by British paratroopers were “unlawfully killed” paving the way for those responsible to be prosecuted. However, Mr. Bradley, who was a priest ministering in Derry at the time and who attended a number of the dead and wounded, said he was “saddened” by the leak which, he said, had put “extra pressure” on the families of those killed. He said: “I am sure it has many other aspects to it and to run with one aspect of it, even if it happens to be an aspect that some of the families may wish to see – and they have a right to see it happen – it still should not have come out in this particular manner.” Mr. Bradley is expected to join the thousands of people in Derry’s Guildhall Square at 3.30pm this afternoon where British Prime Minister David Cameron’s speech to the House of Commons on the report’s findings will be broadcast on large screens. Bloody Sunday families have called on people to join them at 2.30pm for a short march from the Bloody Sunday monument in Rossville Street to Guildhall Square, the original destination of the ill-fated Civil Rights march. As the march takes place, representatives from each of the Bloody Sunday families will be reading Lord Saville’s report inside the Guildhall before emerging to give their reaction.
