Big Spring Clean volunteers congratulate

Those who took part in the Big Spring Clean across Inishowen have been congratulated on their “excellent effort.” In recent weeks, hundreds of volunteers throughout the peninsula collected tonnes of litter from roadsides and public areas as part of the National Spring Clean, Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative. The latest clean-up, organised by local County Councillors Mickey Doherty and Martin Farren, took place in the Moville, Greencastle and Shrove areas on Tuesday and Thursday of last week. Previous to that, Buncrana, Carndonagh and Carrowmenagh were among the areas included in the initiative. A clean-up in the Muff, Quigley’s Point and Redcastle areas, resulted in a staggering 19 tonnes of rubbish being picked up. Now Taisce, the group behind the initiative, has urged local communities to continue the “good work” already carried out. Emlyn Cullen, National Spring Clean manager, said the initiative was designed to heighten awareness of litter and waste issues and promote personal responsibility for litter all year round. And he congratulated everyone who took part. He said: “It is so heartening to see such a great response to this year’s campaign. With so much negativity around at the moment, the National Spring Clean provides the perfect vehicle for harnessing the spirit of community. We would like to praise all of the wonderful community volunteers for their hard work and dedication to cleaning up our countryside”. The National Spring Clean campaign is Ireland’s largest anti-litter initiative. Organised by An Taisce and funded by the Department of the Environment Heritage and Local Government, the initiative relied on volunteers organising clean-ups in their local communities. The campaign is sponsored by Coca-Cola Bottlers Ireland and the Wrigley Company. It is also supported by Repak who supply colour coded refuse sacks for recycling the materials collected. The campaign is backed by all Local Authorities who co-ordinate activity in their communities.
