More historic finds in Cooley graveyard

Cooley graveyard in Moville is fast becoming a treasure trove of historical finds. Earlier this year, a group of volunteers from the Cooley Cross group set up to clean up the historic site, discovered a number of ancient carvings which are currently being examined by an arachaelogist. In the latest clean-up of the graveyard, the group uncovered a number of previously unknown carved headstones. Councillor Mickey Doherty congratulated the volunteers on the great work carried out by the group. Cllr. Doherty said he was “very impressed” with the clean-up that had taken place from when he first visited the site with the committee in October last year. Meanwhile, the clean-up at the cemetery is continuing and Moville-based Councillor Martin Farren, also a member of the organising committee, has called for for the continuing support of everyone in “this vital and important project.” The group hope to finish the work this weekend and are calling on volunteers to join them over their two-day effort cleaning the site on Saturday between 10.00am and 4.00pm and Sunday between 11.00am and 3.00pm. Meanwhile, a fundraising table quiz will take place in Rawdon’s Bar at 10.00pm sharp. Ten euro per team of four with spot prizes, raffle and food followed by music and craic.
